El Dorado
A young Spanish chronicler in the early 17th century arrives in the New World determined to find the fabled city of El Dorado — a place his uncle's old maps describe as a kingdom of gold in the high Andes. As he travels — through the Bogotá highlands, past Lake Guatavita, up into the cloud-forests — he meets local guides who tell him the real story: the gold the Spaniards heard about was not a city but a single sacred ritual long since ended, where a Muisca zipa was once anointed in gold dust and rowed onto a lake of mountain water. The young chronicler, unlike his uncle, listens. He writes the true story in his journal and returns home not with gold but with respect — and a small woven cloth gifted to him by a wise elder, which he treasures the rest of his days.
