The Dragon's Secret
A boy lives in a fishing village on the black-rock slopes of a volcanic island in a tropical sea. Everyone in the village knows about the dragon. It has lived inside the volcano for forty years, never coming out, never attacking — but the adults speak of it in low voices and keep children away from the upper paths. The boy has grown up listening to those stories and noticing something no one else mentions: in forty years the dragon has never hurt anyone. Something about that feels important. Carefully and respectfully, he begins climbing — leaving small offerings of fruit, learning the path one switchback at a time — and discovers that the dragon is old, lonely, and was simply waiting for someone willing to listen. The village learns to share the mountain with a guardian who only ever wanted to be left in peace.
